Norm Macdonald says goodbye in a Netflix special, with a little help from his friends

(CNN) The context is more important than the content in "Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special," a spare one-man comedy show that the former "Weekend Update" anchor, knowing that he was ill, wrote and performed in a single take at home alone   before his death   in September. The posthumous release provides a fitting and deeply personal tribute, as well as a primer on the art of stand-up. Netflix has packaged Macdonald's performance, which runs a little over 50 minutes, with a half-hour discussion featuring six of his friends: Dave Chappelle, David Letterman, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Conan O'Brien, and Molly Shannon, who spend another 30 minutes or so reminiscing about him while deconstructing what viewers just saw. Chappelle calls the stark setting "very endearing," while Letterman notes that without an audience to respond to the material, "We weren't watching standup comedy. Without that audience, you don't get the full measure of Norm...

Memorial Day: We know the faces

Whenever I see a photo of a U.S. Marine, my mind is transported back to 40 years ago. I know the face. It is mine. It was back in 1982, when a formerly lumpy 26-year-old three-and-a-half-year college student clawed and crawled and pushed himself through boot camp by the ragged edge of tentative tenacity. I know about the morning wake-up calls — drill instructors slammed trash can lids on the spotless floor, barracks overhead lights blazing in sleepy eyes like stinging sparks, the split-second scramble to spring up from bed, or fall off the upper bed like a bowling ball and standing at attention, in my underwear, in front of your rack. Bartlesville Planning Commission OKs new digital billboard guidelines.   What's next? I have heard the growling, rasping voices of DIs ripping through my ears like a school of piranhas. I know about the bedtime ritual, every recruit lying at attention in his bed, staring upward and reciting or singing in unison the Marine Corps H...

Apex Legends Mobile Should Not Follow The Base Game's Character Trend

Apex Legends Mobile is getting a fresh start with just ten characters, and because of that, it can avoid the base game's biggest fault. After  Apex Legends ’ lackluster Switch release, many may have believed it would stick to its guns: PC and consoles. But an all-new  Apex Legends  game, built from the ground up for mobile, is releasing worldwide today, May 17.  Apex Legends Mobile  features a limited cast of characters for now, but it will likely introduce old ones alongside its exclusive game modes and characters too. In fact, for launch, a new face is joining the  Apex Legends Mobile  roster: Fade. Fade can be described as a more offensive version of Wraith, who gets a speed boost after sliding, can flashback in the void, and can cast everyone into the void (which has a serious number of potential competitive plays). However,  Fade’s role as an offensive legend  may be concerning for some fans. As it stands, there are 21 characters ...

After the officer told Miller, "I was just trying to be respectful," the actor said, "If you fail to do that again, that is an act of intentional bigotry" and cites "U.S. federal law." "Please call me 'they/them/theirs,' you can use the term ...
